William James Carter was born in 1886. He was the oldest son, and the second of five children born to Richard and Susan Carter. Richard Carter was a stock jobber, who dealt in buying and selling shares.
The 1911 records William as living at 13 Cranbrook Park, Ilford, with his parents and his four younger siblings. William was at this time a clerk at the Stock Exchange.
William enlisted with the 10th Battalion, the Essex Regiment, becoming a Second Lieutenant. He was killed in action 21st September 1918, aged 33 years old. His name is featured on the Lempire British Cemetery Memorial in France. Probate records for William show him as living at 20 Holcombe Road, Ilford, at the time of his death in 1918.
