Born in 1894 at Woodford, son of James and Frances Martha Martin. The family home was later 71 High Road, Woodford Wells.
1901: Living with his family at Chaverley Cottages Woodford Wells, his father was a Bricklayers Labourer. 1911: A Railway Clerk living with his family at 1 Reads Cottages, Woodford Wells. Father was now a Labourer with the Metropolitan Water Board.
31st July 1917 was day one of the lengthy Third Battle of Ypres, this phase being the "Battle of Pilckem Ridge". The attack covered a 15 mile wide front in Flanders, with 2 Northamptonshire advancing towards Bellewaarde Farm, and securing the high ground of Bellewaarde Ridge. Captain Thomas Coyler-Fergusson earned a Victoria Cross that day.
