Biography

Born in 1898 at Woodford, son of Augustus (Florist, later Nursery Salesman) and Clara Shook. At various times the family name had been recorded as Shook, Shuck, Shoko and Schuck. Augustus was born in Hanover Germany, and in 1911 remained a German National.

1901: With his family at 10 Hester Villa between the Home for Old Ladies in Beaconsfield Road, and the Mission Church in Grove Road.1911: With his family at “Ruddock” Peel Road, South Woodford. The family home was later 24 Oakdale Road, South Woodford.

He served with 32 (East Ham) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, which arrived in France as part of 41 Division on 16th May 1916.Their first action would be at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette on 15th September 1916, which was part of the Somme Offensive. Here, they advanced from Delville Wood in support of 10 Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment. The Battalion successfully captured and occupied Flers, (where today stands the memorial to 41st Divison), from where they were relieved on the morning of 16th September. The success of the day, which had included the first use of tanks, came at a price; 10 Officers were wounded, and 283 Other Ranks killed wounded or missing. Victor Shook died from the wounds he had received during this action.
