Thomas Henry Fentiman was born in Wanstead in 1896. In 1911, he was living at 33 Wellesley Road, Wanstead, with his parents and siblings. His father, also called Thomas, was a coachman and he and his wife, Mary, had eleven children, although two died in infancy before the 1901 census.
Thomas was working as an ironmonger’s errand boy in 1911, aged 15. He eventually joined the army, first in the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, and then later transferred to the Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He died fighting in the Middle East on 21st April 1916 aged 20 years old.
William’s name is listed in the Armara War Cemetery, Iraq.
