Lancelot Charles Kemp was born in 1893 and was the youngest son of Charles and Eliza Kemp. He was considerably younger than his two older brothers, and by 1911 just he and his parents were living in the family home at 381 Grove Green Road, Leytonstone.
Lancelot worked as a clerk, before joining the army with the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery. He was sent to Belgium where he was injured and died of his wounds on 31st July 1917.
Lancelot’s eldest brother, Cyril, was killed in action in France on 6th July 1917, just 25 days before Lancelot was killed.
Although no census data has been found to place Lancelot or his family in the Redbridge area, it is possible he had friends or family in the area who requested for his name to appear on a local memorial.
