Biography

Born in 1893 at New Southgate, the son of Herbert and Annie Wright.

1901: Family living at the North Lodge Claybury Hospital, Woodford Bridge, where Herbert was a Gate Porter. 1911: George was a 17 year old Insurance Clerk with the Pearl & Co, living with his family (including seven siblings) at ”The Morleys” Woodford Bridge. Herbert was now a Hall Porter at the hospital.

George enlisted at Ilford, and was posted to the “West Ham” Battalion of the Regiment, which had been raised in West Ham on 27th December 1914.

At 05.45 on 13th November 1916, the Battalion moved forward under the cover of an artillery barrage to engage German forces in the Battle of Ancre - the last of the “Somme” battles during the autumn of 1916. The offensive was called off on 18th November 1916.  On an unknown date, Wright sustained wounds from which he died on 24th November 1916 in the 3rd or 44th Casualty Clearing Station at Puchevillers.
