Frederick John Lahive was born in 1886, the son of carpenter Henry and his wife, Elizabeth. Frederick and his two younger brothers, Henry and Robert, were born in Fife, Scotland. In 1911, Frederick had joined the Navy as a Leading Seaman and was living in Essex.
On 6th October 1918, Frederick was a Petty Officer on HMS Ontranto. He was drowned when the ship was wrecked following a collision and his body was not recovered. His name is recorded on Chatham Naval Memorial.
Although no census data has been found to place Frederick or his family in the Redbridge area, it is possible he had friends or family in the area who requested for his name to appear on a local memorial.
