Following the successful British advance at Cambrai, German shelling of their positions at Bourlon Salient began at dawn on 30th November 1917 and became more persistent. It heralded a German counter attack and fierce fighting which lasted from 30th November to 5th December. Initial returns showed 13 Essex suffered 16 other ranks killed, 78 wounded and 269 missing - many of whom were later declared dead.
