Biography

Alfred Herbert Ford was born in 1899, the oldest child of grocer-traveller Alfred Ford and his wife, Clara. The family first lived in East Ham, but later moved to 34 Belgrave Road, Wanstead. Alfred had three younger sisters and one younger brother, all born between 1902 and 1909.

In 1911, Alfred was thirteen years old and still at school. After enlisting with the Honourable Artillery Company as a Private in the Infantry, Alfred was sent to the Western Front, where he died on 8th January 1918.

His grave is at City of London Cemetery and Crematorium, suggesting he was in England at the time of his death and so possibly died of wounds or illness.
