Biography 

Born in 1896 at Buckhurst Hill, son of William (Coal Porter at Claybury Asylum) and Sarah Savill. 1901: With his family at 2 Roberts Cottages, Alfred Road, Buckhurst Hill. 1911: A Drapers Boy at Puddicombes Broadway Store, living with his family at 22 Avenue Road, Snakes Lane, Woodford Green. The family home was later at 7 Ray Lodge Road, Woodford Green.

He enlisted in London, was allocated to the Royal Artillery and served with 18 Battery, 3rd Brigade. On 19th October 1915 this Battery had been ordered from France to Salonika. It is recorded, and supported by family information, that on 21st June 1918 William was drowned at Salonkia, it is believed along with some horses. He was recovered and lies buried in Greece.
