Believed born in Wanstead Slip around 1889, son of Henry (Bricklayer) and Jane Elizabeth, otherwise Lilian Squires. 1891: With his family (including Step Siblings Lilian and Victor Johnson) at 10 Pevensey Terrace, Pevensey Road, Leyton. 1901: An ironmonger’s errand boy, living with his family at 87 Pevensey Road, Leyton. 1911: A Gunner with 146 Battery Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich. The family home at this time was at 56 Trumpington Road, Forest Gate.
He was working on the staff of Claybury Mental Hospital when war broke out, and was recalled to service. He arrived in France on 16th August 1914, and took part in the battles of that year, qualifying for the 1914 star and “Mons” Clasp. He served with various Howitzer units until 16th June 1915.
On this day he was Killed in Action near Festubert at the time of the nearby 2nd Action at Givenchy.
