William Benjamin Bolton was born in Edinburgh in 1887 and was the eldest of six siblings. In 1901, the Bolton family were living at 39 Addison Road, Wanstead. In 1911, William was working as a bank clerk. In 1912, he married Edith Annie Linklater Hudson and they moved into their new home at 102 Upper Walthamstow Road.
William enlisted with the 6th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifles, where he eventually became Lance Corporal. During his time at war, he must have fallen ill or sustained injuries as he was sent home to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham, Kent, where he eventually died on 7th February 1917; his grave is also located here.
William’s widow remarried in 1921.
