Born in 1887 at Chigwell Row, son of James (Domestic Coachman) and Elizabeth Carter. 1901: A Scholar with his family at Thurlby Road, Woodford Bridge. In 1906 his father died. 1911: A Painter of Houses living with his widowed mother and brother Ernest at 25 Stoneycroft Road, Woodford Bridge.
He enlisted at Epping, and was allocated to the Essex Regiment.
On 16th May 1917 the Battalion was back in Arras, occupying Tilloy Line. They relieved 8 East Yorkshire at Brown Line near Fenchy Chapel, and then the Royal West Kents at Orange Hill (Lancer Lane). An attack by 87 Brigade on Bois des Aubepines and Infantry Hill during 19th May 1917 provoked a strong German artillery barrage on British positions which killed Woodford resident Lt. Bernard Warner of this Battalion. During their time in the line, accurate German artillery caused a number of casualties, and probably this is what also cost Walter Carter his life.
