Biography 

Valentine James Smith was born in Leyton 1981. He lived with his family at 647 High Road Leyton, until he joined the Royal Artillery with his older brother Ernest, possibly in 1907. According to the 1911 census, he was a driver for the Royal Artillery and later became a gunner.

Valentine was sent to Belgium on the Western Front but was injured during battle. He died from wounds on 26th August 1914.
