Biography

Born in 1885 at Tottenham, son of Thomas (General Labourer, later Brickmaker) and Harriett Phillips. 1891: With his family at Noah’s Ark Cottages Lower Road, Woodford Green. 1901: A Labourer at the Woodford Brickfields, still with his family at Noah’s Ark Cottages. In 1908 he married Emily Clara Hubbard. 1911: He had become a Brickmaker, living with his wife and children Arthur, Mary, and the soon to be born Agnes. Their home was 15 Beechcroft Terrace, Maybank Road, South Woodford.

He enlisted, possibly in a Labour Company of the Army Service Corps, serving later as Private 590082 in the Labour Corps. His medal card suggests he qualified with them for the 1914/15 Star when he entered the Egyptian Theatre of Operations on 24th October 1915. However The Labour Corps as a unit did not exist at that time. He later served with 3 Essex Regiment as Private 19441.

He was based in the UK with them at the beginning of 1919, and during February 1919 he became ill. He was confined to the Military Hospital at Clapton where he died on 28th February 1919.
