Biography

Robert Dunstun Filtness was born in 1888, to Elizabeth Fitness and her husband C. Filtness. In 1911, Robert was living with his mother, older brother William and sister Bessie, at 24 Cecil Road, Ilford, and was working as a law clerk.

At the outbreak of the war, Robert joined the 4th Otago Infantry Regiment, a New Zealand regiment, so it is very possible he was living in New Zealand at the time. Robert was killed in action on the Messines Ridge, Belgium, on 7th June 1917. His name is listed on the Messines Ridge Memorial.
