Biography 

Born 1891 in Islington District, the son of Walter F. (Cook and Carver) and Sarah Manley. His formal name was Nicholas but he used name Herbert or the abbreviation Bert. 1901: At 34 Strathleven Road, Lambeth with his family. 1911: No entry found for him, but his parents and some siblings were at 1 Ashford Villa (later 24), Ashford Road, South Woodford.

He enlisted at Stratford, and arrived in France on 12th January 1915. Having returned to the front line in the Ploegsteert area of Belgium, the Battalion were shelled during 5th March 1915. On 9th March 1915 Manley Died from Wounds which he had received, and which may have been caused by that shelling.
