Biography

Born in the summer of 1892 at Wendon near Saffron Walden, son of Edward Clarke. Being a remote location, Edward was most likely an agricultural worker. In 1901 Leonard was a 9 year old Boarder with Charles Waller (Agricultural Labourer) and his wife Mary at Blacksmith Lane, Elmdon, near Saffron Walden.

He served at Private 25447 in the Royal Fusiliers, and Private 58874 with 99 Coy Labour Corps.

In 1918 Leonard married Ethel Gibbs in the West Ham District. In less than a year he was dead. Ironically he died in the West Ham District while on his Demobilisation Leave, perhaps a victim of the Spanish Flu.

In September 1919 Ethel married William Tabor, and later lived at 8 Hope Cottages, Woodford Bridge. It is not clear exactly what connection Leonard had to the Woodford area.
