Biography

Younger son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Macadam, of Aldborough Hall, Ilford. Born in Edinburgh, 1893, and educated at the City of London School, he passed the London Matriculation Examination (first division) and entered Kings College for the purpose of taking a degree in Law. At the outbreak of war he was reading for his final examination for the LL.B. degree, but at once applied for a commission, and to October, 1914, was gazetted to the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment (T.F.) was sent with a draft to Gallipoli, arriving September, 1915, taking over the platoon formerly under his brother. He passed through the rigours and dangers of that campaign. Suffering from the effects of the great blizzard, he was amongst the first evacuated. After recovery, rejoined, his regiment in Egypt, and was wounded at the second battle of Gaza. Subsequently appointed to Headquarters Staff, his duties taking him frequently to Cairo. Whilst there contracted bronchial pneumonia, and died in hospital 19th November, 1918. Resembling his brother in his high character and fine, spirit, the close of a career so full of promise evoked the same sorrow.
