Biography 

Born in 1897 at Brixton, son of James (Beer Trader) and Emily Mary Hatton. 1901: With his family at a pub, 29-31 Cuthbert Street, Manchester. His father died in the spring of 1902 at Bethnal Green, where he ran “The Dolphin” in Church Street. 

1911: Hubert was a scholar living with his Aunt Flora Amelia Jackson and family at 30 Wolseley Road, Portslade, Sussex.

He joined the 16 London Regiment (Queens Westminster Rifles) while living in Woodford. His mother’s address was later given as 158 Princes Road, Buckhurst Hill.

Part of the Battle of the Somme, the main attack on Ginchy was by 47&48 Brigades at 16.45 on 9th September 1916. 56 Division (including 16 London) had supported them to the right by attacking Leuze and Bouleaux Woods. A number of men including Hubert Hatton were subsequently reported missing believed killed, and are commemorated by the Thiepval Memorial.
