Born in 1889 at Leytonstone, son of George Norman (Assistant Examiner at HM Office of Works) and Grace Philips. His Will gives an address of Elizabeth Lodge Crescent Road, South Woodford. Educated at Leyton College, he became a Surveyor, holding post of Assistant Surveyor with the Receivers Office of the Metropolitan Police. A keen tennis player and member of the Woodford Hockey Club, he was also Scoutmaster to the 2nd Epping Forest Troop, and member of the Church of England Mens Society.
Enlisted on 20th December 1914 initially joining the London Scottish, but after training was Commissioned into 6 Essex where he was Assistant Adjutant. Left for Egypt in June 1916, and was Killed in Action during the First Battle of Gaza.
