Biography 

Herbert Heritage was born in 1886 at Islington, the son of Arthur (Travelling Salesman in pressed glass) and Hannah Heritage. Herbert was educated at the Peoples Palace East London. According to the 1901 census Herbet was working as a clerk in a carpet warehouse and living with his parents at Malvern Villa Primrose Road, South Woodford. By 1911 Herbert had become an assistant in the glass and china trade. He was still living with his parents but had moved to 1 Alma Villas Primrose Road, South Woodford.

On the 19th June 1913 Herbert married Maud Rebecca Maynard (daughter of Richard Isaac Maynard) in South Woodford. The couple moved to “Highclere” George Lane South Woodford, and Herbert became a travelling salesman.

Herbert enlisted with army on the 6th June 1916, and he was with the Expeditoonary Force from 7th February 1917. In March 1917 Herbert was engaged in the fighting around Loopa Line near Arras. On the 15th March 1917, after a successful advance, he was struck by a bursting shell while leading his men back to a reserve trench.

In Holy Trinity Church, South Woodford is two carved wooden chairs dedicated to the memory of Herbert Heritage.

He is also remembered at the City of London Cemetery and Chingford Mount Cemetery.
