Biography 

Born in 1897 at Woodford, son of William (Farm Labourer) and Zillah Jessop. 1901: At 3 Monkhams Lane with his family. 1911: With his family at 1 The Retreat, Horn Lane, Woodford Green, a Scholar and Doctors Boy. By this time William had become a painter. Two younger siblings Charles and Moira were staying with relatives in Gotham Nottinghamshire, the home town of their mother.  

He enlisted in 16th Lancers at Walthamstow on 3rd September 1914 as Private 8274, later transferring to Royal Irish Rifles.

After four days rest following the second attack on Bellewaerde, he moved with his Battalion into the line, 1.5 miles South of Hooge in Armagh Wood. The Battalion remained in the trenches from 1st/12th October 1915. George Jessop was Killed in Action at Hooge on 11th October 1915.

With his brother Charles, George is commemorated on the gravestone of his uncle John Smith at St Lawrence Churchyard Gotham, and on the war memorial inside. George had been Baptised in Gotham during 1897.
