Biography

In the records there are conflicting uses of this man’s name and age, leaving some uncertainty about his correct identity.

It is believed he was born in Woodford during 1884, and registered as Frederick George Moore. He was a pre war soldier. In 1906 he married Harriett Ann Blake in Plymouth. The 1911 Census records him as Frederick Moore, a 27 year old Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery, living at The Hill, Lower Hooe, near Plymouth, with his wife Harriett and son George.

His service records do not survive, but he was last serving on a home posting with the Military Proof Party at Woolwich. He is recorded as having “Died of Wounds” in the 1st Birmingham War Hospital (Kings Norton District) at the age of 34 on 19th February 1918. His death is recorded under the name Frederick G Moore. The summary of Soldiers who died in the Great War also records him as Frederick George Moore of Woodford.

He is buried at Chingford Mount cemetery, his CWGC headstone showing the name George Frederick Moore, aged 32, as does their register entry. However the CWGC grave registration document lists him as F.G. Moore.

The name G.F. Moore appears on the main memorial at Holy Trinity Church, above that of W. C. Moore. The latter is believed to be William John, the son of George (General Labourer, formerly at the local brickfields) and Emily Moore, who lived at 2 Granville Buildings, Chigwell Road South Woodford in 1901, and 3 Maybank Terrace, Maybank Road, South Woodford in 1911.

It may be that this casualty is his brother, George Moore, who was recorded with the family aged 4 in the 1901 Census. That however would more likely accord with the George Frederick Moore, born in the West Ham District during the March 1887 Quarter. It would not accord with the age given by the casualty himself in the 1911 Census.

His wife “Mrs H Moore” is shown by the CWGC to be living at 69 Gildersome Street, Woolwich after the war.

X/R: Possible Brother of Private William John Moore.
