Biography

Born in 1893 at Woodford, youngest son of Charles (Journeyman Baker) and Florence Mary Green. 1901: At school in Carshalton Surrey. 1911: A Shipping Clerk living with his widowed mother and two brothers at 1 Mizpah Villas, (later 71) Cowslip Road South Woodford.

He joined the Army soon after war was declared, initially served in the Middlesex Regiment with the number 343, but transferred to 11 Royal Fusiliers. He was sent to France in 07-15.

During 26th September 1916 the whole of 54 Brigade, which included 11 Royal Fusiliers were directed to attack some 300 yards of enemy front line, so at 12.35 “D” Company began to advance. In the fierce fighting which followed, the Fusiliers suffered many casualties, but Thiepval was captured. Sadly, during the night of 26/27 September 1916, George Green died from severe wounds.

While the church memorial refers to C Green, the war shrine erected in December 1916 at the junction of Primrose and Maybank Roads listed a G Green. It is believed both these entries refer to the same casualty.
