Born in 1882 at Romford, son of Edward (Domestic Gardener) and Fanny Barnes. 1891: With his family at Hare Street, Rumford. 1901: A Walking Stick Mounter, with his family at 5 Trevor Terrace, Trevor Road, Hill Side, Woodford Green. In 1908 he married Nellie Louisa Green. 1911: A Commercial Traveler in umbrella and stick accessories, living with his wife and sons Charles Frederick (1) and Percy Harold (under 1 month) at 1 Cambridge Terrace, Horn Lane, Woodford Green. His probate address was 1 High Elms, Woodford Green (Walthamstow). He enlisted at Woodford.
On a date unknown, Frederick Barnes sustained wounds from which he would die in one of the Military Field Hospitals at Rouen.
It is known that on 28th January 1917 22 Royal Fusiliers moved into Wolfe Huts on the Albert-Bapaume Road to support 23 Royal Fusiliers. This was an area which had been fought over and captured in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. It had been almost completely devastated, seemingly consisting of earth, shell holes and mine craters. Temporary roads and tracks snaked across this wilderness.
