Biography

Born in 1892 at South Woodford, son of Robert John (Commercial Traveler in General Drapery) and Alice Walker. 1901: With his family at 5 Clifton Terrace, Maybank Road. 1911: A Shipping Agents Clerk, with his family at 5 George Cottages, Violet Road, South Woodford. His Probate gives the address of 2 Hamburg Villas Cowslip Road. His father had died in 1902, and the family home was later at 88 Pulteney Road, South Woodford.

Frank moved about in the Army, serving with the Royal Field Artillery, Liverpool Regiment, and finally the Border Regiment.

On 27th January 1917 the Battalion along with 1 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was ordered to attack part of the enemy “Landwehr” Trench south of LeTransloy on the Somme. The usual artillery barrage preceded the attack which began at 05.30 along a 750 yard front. By 07.00 the first and second objectives had been taken along with prisoners, but consolidation on the flank occupied by the Border Regiment was difficult due to frozen ground, enemy snipers and artillery. Eventual success was due in no small part to Sgt Edward Mott who rushed and took a machine gun position, so earning a Victoria Cross. Unfortunately, Frank Walker was of those Killed in Action during the day.
