Born in 1895 at Woodford Bridge, third son of Mary and Edward Herring, who was the Publican of the Three Jolly Wheelers Public House, Woodford Bridge. They also repaired carts. In 1911 he was a butcher still living with his family at the pub. He married Mabel Skilton in 1912, living at Maybank Cottage Maybank Road, South Woodford. In 1916 they were living in George Lane with their son Jack.
He joined Kitcheners Army at Stratford in October 1914 and served in France and Salonika, from where he was invalided home with Dysentery and Malaria. Having recovered he was sent to France again in May 1917, and he later died from wounds received in action at Ypres in Belgium.
