Biography 

Born in 1894 at Ilford, son and only child of James (Bank Cashier) and Ethel Marshall. 1911: Living with his family in Eltham, the family home was later at “Hillside” Monkhams Avenue, Woodford Green. Attended Colfe Grammar School and was a pupil at farms in Oxfordshire and Cornwall.

He joined the Army in November 1915 and was sent to France. The Battle of Morval, one of the actions during the Battle of the Somme, lasted from 25/28 September 1916. This attack on Morval, Gueudecourt and Lesboefs north of Bouleaux Wood which were held by the German First Army, was a joint enterprise with the French. These villages had been the final objective of the Battle of Flers Courcelette on 15/22 September 1916.

Although the villages were captured, Eric Marshall was Killed in Action during the first day of the battle.
