Born in 1879 at Islington, the son of David James (Mechanical Engineer) and Emily Hills. 1901: A 22 year old Stockbrokers Clerk living with his parents at 209 Devons Road, Bow.
In 1904 he married Minnie Blanch Clifford. 1911: A Stockbrokers Clerk living with his wife and family at 43 St Albans Road, Woodford Green. His Will gives an address of The Old Mill House, Chigwell Road. He enlisted at St. Paul’s Churchyard.
On 21st March 1918 began the great German ground attack “Operation Michael” along the whole front between the River Oise and the River Sensée, which opened the Battle of the Somme (1918). The plan was launched with an intense artillery barrage against rear positions such as Artillery Batteries, machine gun posts and Command Units. David Hills was Killed in Action during this attack.
