10 Essex were on the Somme during June1916, when preparations were going on for the major advance on 1st July 1916. They were in the line at Carnoy from 8th June until 10th June when they returned to Bray on being relieved by 8 East Surrey Regiment.

Unfortunately while in the trenches on 10th June, both Charles Beardwell and Corporal S.G. Bush were Killed in Action. It is not clear just how they lost their lives, but in order to disrupt preparations, British positions were under attack from German shellfire and snipers. In addition, a trench raid was mounted during the day.
