Biography

Born in 1891 at Upton Park, son of Robert (initially an Inspector at Automated Co. (sweets), later a Publican) and Harriet Moyler. 1901: A Scholar with his family at 82 North Street, Barking. 1911: An unemployed Boot Salesman with his family at 50 Field Road, Forest Gate.

On 6th August 1913 at Stratford Registry Office he married Rosa Edwards. They then lived at 98 Chester Road, Seven Kings. Their son Bertram was born on 9th December 1915. In civilian life Bertram was a Meter Omnibus Driver with the London General Omnibus Co.

He joined the Army on 10th December 1915, and was placed in the Army Reserve next day. His address was given as 40 Ley Street, Ilford. The family home was later 210 Ley Street. On 19th May 1917 he was mobilised and attached to the Army Service Corps as a Driver.

He was sent to serve in East Africa, arriving there on 23rd September 1917. He died in 4th South African Field Ambulance (Mtandawala East Africa) at 04.40 on 22nd November 1917, from enteric fever contracted while on active service.

By 1914 his father had moved on to be the Publican at the “Fox & Hounds” High Road Woodford Bridge, which his brothers Robert and John gave this as their address on discharge from the Army. This would likely explain why Bertram, married and living in Ilford, can be found on the memorials at Woodford Bridge.
