Biography 

Bertie James Crisp was born in 1892 to Thomas and Margaret Crisp. Bertie was the second eldest of four children and the only son. In 1901, the family were living at 16 Watkins Cottages, Snakes Lane, Woodford. According to the 1901 census, Bertie’s father, Thomas, was a sewage worker.

In 1911, Bertie was working as a railway gate porter; he worked the night duty at the level crossing Wadham Road. He lived at 20 Firtree Cottages, Snakes Lane, Woodford Green, as a lodger with the Gregg family.

Bertie enlisted in the army with the 10th Battalion, London Regiment, and was sent to the Western Front. He was killed in action on the 21st August 1918; by this point he had achieved the rank of Sergeant. He is buried in Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery in France.
