Biography

Born on 15th June 1887 at Wimbledon, son of William Joel (Hospital Attendant) and Sarah Ann Slater. He was Baptised on 28th August 1887 at Holy Trinity & St Peter Wimbledon, where the family lived at 6 Spencer Terrace, Hayden Lane. 1901: The family had moved to 12 Oxford Terrace, Chigwell Road, South Woodford, his father being an Attendant at Claybury Asylum. William had left school and was working as a Van Boy for a laundry company. 1911: The family home was at 1 Granville Buildings, Chigwell Road, South Woodford. His father was now a House Painter and General Shopkeeper, assisted in the latter role by his wife.

Though Arthur seems to have been missed by the 1911 census, when he enlisted in the Army at Stratford, he was shown as living in South Woodford.

He was serving in the Ypres Theatre of Operations when the Third Battle of Ypres began on 31st July 1917. It is possible on that day he sustained the wounds from which he died at 53 Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul.

X/R: Gunner Harry Francis Slater (Brother).
