Born in 1882 at Leytonstone, eldest son of Arthur Edward (Builders Foreman) and Hannah Ingram. 1891: A Scholar at Churchfields School, with his family at 2 Albert Terrace, Albert Road, South Woodford. He served in the Army for two years during the Boer War. 1911: A Carpenter/Joiner, living with his family at 3 Primrose Road, South Woodford.
On 4th November 1914 he rejoined the Army at Stratford, and was allocate to the Royal Field Artillery. His occupation was Carpenter/Joiner, living at 6 Clydesdale Terrace, Albert Road, South Woodford. He went to 2 Depot RFA in Preston, was promoted to Bombardier from 1st December 1914, and Corporal from 22nd November 1915. However at his own request he reverted to the rank of Gunner on 8th August 1915.
23rd January 1916 saw him with the British Expeditionary Force, and then posted to 21 Divisional Ammunition Column. On 26th May 1916 he was transferred to 21 Division Medium Trench Mortar Battery. He was serving with them on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when he was Killed in Action by the burst of “a huge German shell.”
