Biography

Born 25th September 1892 at Forest Gate, eldest son of Arthur (Architect - FRIBA and District Surveyor with the London Building Authority) and Edith Crow. 1901: With his family at 1 Montpelier Crescent, Brighton. 1911: A Law Student with his family at “The Firs” Monkhams Avenue, Woodford Green. Educated at Orley Farm School Harrow and Haileybury College from 1906-1910. Articled to C J Marder & Sons New Square Lincolns Inn.

Enlisted in the Artists Rifles at Romford in August 1914, and transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment where he served as a Captain. In the spring 1915 he was Adjutant of the Officers Institute School at Tunbridge Wells, but ill health forced him to resign his Commission in July 1916. He later went to the front as a volunteer with the Church Army Canteen Service.

The Review of Exemptions Act gave him an opportunity to seek re-examination for active service. Under the new rules while he was declared fit to hold Officer rank, his health dictated that he could only serve within the UK. Unable to accept this, he enlisted as a Private in the Essex Regiment.

He was Killed in Action during fighting in the area between Poelcappelle and the Ypres-Sladen railway line.
