Arnold David Whitby was born in Woodford in 1887. He was the son of boot-maker David Whitby and his wife, Jessie. Arnold was the third of five children: Herbert (b.1883),
Florence (b.1886), Walter (b.1896), and Maud (b.1896). In 1891, Arnold was living at 37 High Road, Woodford. In 1911, Arnold’s parents and younger siblings were living at 1 Voluntary Place in Wanstead, but Arnold was recorded as living with his regiment, the 2nd Battalion East, Yorkshire Regiment, having joined the army as a Private some time before 1911.
Arnold was sent to the Western Front and was killed in action on 20th October 1914. His body was not recovered but his name is on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
