Biography

Born at Haggerston London, son of Samuel (Labourer, later a Carman) and Isabella Susannah Evans. He was baptised on 15th April 1894 when the family lived at 5 Brownlow Street, Haggerston. The family lived at various addresses in the Shoreditch/Hackney area. His mother died in 1908.

1911: He is shown as an unemployed 17 year old, living with his sister and brother in law, Charlotte and Albert Snoxell, at 1 Front Church Row, Woodford Bridge.

He enlisted at Bethnal Green and served with 7 East Kent Regiment (The Buffs). It was officially accepted that he was Killed in Action with them near Poelcapelle during first day of the Battle of Passchendaele.

On 10th October at 03.00, 55 Brigade including 7 East Kents were ordered into the line to relieve 32 Brigade near Poelcapelle. From these trenches 55 Brigade attacked north of the Lekkerboterbeek Creek on 12th October. The ground consisted of mud and shell holes, made worse by heavy rain on 11th October. These conditions made rapid movement impossible, and Germans stalled the advance with accurate and heavy fire. To the south the position was worse, and overall the action failed to achieve its central objectives.

Albert Evans was among those who disappeared in the quagmire during the course of the attack, and it is there that his death was later presumed to have occurred.
