Born in 1892 at Kennington, son of William Henry (Carpenter) and Agnes Maxwell. 1901: With his family at 7 Geneva Terrace, Lambeth. 1911: A Clerk on the Railway, with his family at May Villa West Grove, Woodford Green. By 1917 the family home was 33 West Grove.
He joined the London Regiment on 3rd September 1914, having been in the Great Eastern Railway since 21st June 1908. On enlistment he was a Clerk in the Divisional Commercial Superintendents Office in London.
In November 1916 his Battalion was sent to Salonika and on 2nd July 1917 to Egypt, arriving at Alexandria on 5th July 1917. During November 1917 after a period of stalemate the Egypt Expeditionary Force began a series of actions which pushed the Turks back towards Jerusalem. This included battles at Hareira & Sheria (6/7 November) Mughar Ridge (10/14 November) and Jerusalem (17th November to 30th December).
During this period William Maxwell sustained wounds and was removed to a Military Hospital facility in Cairo where he died on 18th November 1917.
He is remembered on the Great Eastern Railway Memorial at Liverpool Street Station.
