Biography

Born in 1888 at East Langton Leicestershire, son of Albert William (Commercial Clerk with J. Smithers & Son) and Elizabeth Hewitt. 1901: A Scholar with his family including brother Charles at 46 Wycliffe Road Battersea. His father died in 1904. 1911: An Accountants Clerk living with his widowed mother and brother at 53 Arliss Road, Lavender Hill Surrey.

When he enlisted in London his residence was noted as South Woodford.  He joined 6 London on 3rd September 1914 at the same time as his brother Charles and they served together.

On 7th September 1917 the Battalion were at the tented Vancouver Camp near Dickebusch South West of Ypres, preparing to move into the line. At 15.15 and 16.00 the camp was bombed by German aircraft which caused a number of casualties.

As this is the only recorded incident of casualties in the days before 12th September 1917,  it is probable that Thomas Hewitt was injured by this bombing, and subsequently Died of Wounds  in the tented 10 Casualty Clearing Station at  Remy Sidings Lijssenthoek.

He and his brother are commemorated on the family gravestone at Merton Cemetery, and Wanstead War Memorial.

X/R: Lance Corporal Charles Aela Hewitt (Brother) and same Battalion.
