Robert Frederick Wayman was born in 1892, the eldest son of house agent William and his wife, Elizabeth Wayman. In 1901, he was living with his parents and younger sisters and brother at 241 Leytonstone Road, Stratford.
By 1911, the Wayman family had moved to Woodford Green and were living at ‘Hillside’, Monkham Drive and Robert was working as a tobacco clerk. When war broke out in 1914, Robert joined the Royal Flying Corps with the QMS Westminster Dragoons. He spent the war as a pilot, progressing to Second Lieutenant.
After four years of active service, on the 23rd of September 1918, he was accidentally killed while flying over Heliopolis in Cairo, Egypt. His name appears on the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. Robert’s family entered a moving tribute to him in a a newspaper: ‘In ever loving memory and affectionate memory of our dear Rob (Robert Frederick)….
