Biography

Maurice Arthur Pritchard Shawyer was the second youngest of four children, born to Arthur and Emily Shawyer, in 1893. At the time of the 1911 census, Maurice was living with his family at 25 St. Margaret’s Road, Manor Park. At some time between 1911 and 1914, Maurice enlisted in the Middlesex Regiment.

Maurice was sent to the Western Front. He was killed in action at Croix Barbee on 14th October 1914 and was buried at Vieille Chapelle in France.

Although no census data has been found to place Maurice in the Redbridge area, it is possible he had friends or family in the area who requested for his name to appear on local memorial.
