Born 1879 at Woodford, son of George Albert (Labourer) and Susan Eve. 1881: With his family at 5 Saville Row, Woodford Green. 1891: With his family at 16 Gladstone Cottages, Castle Yard. 1901: A Milkman’s Roundsman boarding with Annie Batt a widowed needlewoman at 23 Burgess Road, West Ham.
1905: He married Ellen Mary Ann Pye from Chelmsford, and they had three children Doris Ellen (1905) Leonard John (1913) and Alec Henry (1917). 1911: A Grocers Carman with his family at 2 Payzes Cottages, near Mill Lane/Castle Yard at Woodford Green.
For many years he was employed by Ralph Kent at Woodford Green, but later worked for the Grocer Liddle & Sons at South Woodford. He enlisted at Woodford initially with 28 London Regiment (Artists Rifles), and was sent to France in June 1917. Gassed in the retreat from Cambrai in December 1917, he recovered and returned to the trenches. On 28th March 1918 he was involved in the First Battle of Arras during the German Spring Offensive. After a short respite he was returned to the front line where he was Killed in Action.
He is also remembered on the gravestone of his wife at St Michaels Church Galleywood.
