Biography
John Arthur Witham was born in 1897 to James and Katherine Witham. John’s father was a cowman (presumably either on a farm or a dairy) and in 1911 the family (including a two year old daughter, Mary) were living at 2 Hawsworth Terrace, Smeaton Road, Chigwell.
John enlisted in the army with the 10th Battalion, the Essex Regiment. He was sent to the Western Front, but was killed in action on the 10th November 1917. John’s name is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
