Ernest William Gillingham was born in Cambridge in 1895. His parents were Isaac Ernest and Emma Gillingham. Ernest had an older sister called Florence who was born in 1891, and a much younger brother Edwin who was born in 1909. In 1911, the family was living at 26 Camden Terrace on Green Lane, Ilford. Ernest was 16 and working as an office boy, his father was a railway guard, and his sister Florence was a dress maker.
Sergeant Ernest Gillingham was killed in action in Palestine on 19th September 1918 in the last battle of the campaign. Ernest’s body was buried in Ramleh War Cemetery in Israel.
