Born in 1894 in Woodford, the third son Alfred (Farm Worker) and Mary Maria Farrow. 1901: With his family at 2 Violet Cottages, Kinsley’s Farm, Woodford. 1911: A Carman with Sheppard Brothers the builders, living with his family at 5 Mallards Cottages, Milkwell Farm, Woodford. Family home was later 7 and 8 Horn Lane, Woodford Green.
In 1915 he married Jessie Wainman, but from January 1916 he was serving in France.
At the time of his death 6 Division 16 Brigade was fighting in the Battle of Flers - Courcelette, finally breaching the German lines with the help of a small number of tanks, the first time this weapon had been used in the war. Highwood was captured and the troops moved on towards Courcelette.
At some point during this action he received fatal shrapnel wounds, and died in one of the Base Hospitals at Rouen.
