Ernest Fuller Thurgood was born in Wanstead in 1890. He was the youngest of six children born to James and Emily Thurgood. Ernest’s father, James, was a partner in W. Shuttleworth & Co. Tea Dealers, 34 Fenchurch Street, City of London but died in 1891 when Ernest was one year old.
By 1911, Ernest was living in Wandsworth with his Uncle Albert Rowlinson and was working as a tea buyer’s assistant. He joined the army after the outbreak of war and rose through the ranks to become a Captain in the 16th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
Ernest was killed in action on 31st March 1918. He was buried in Chambrecy British Cemetery, France.
