Biography 

Edward William Smith was born in 1886 to Frank, a commission agent, and his wife, Alice Smith. The youngest of four children, Edward was educated at Bancroft’s School, Woodford Green. In 1911, Edward was working as a banker’s clerk and living with his parents at 48 Balfour Road, Ilford.

Edward joined the Royal Navy, eventually becoming a Leading Seaman. He served with the Howes Battalion, the Royal Naval Division, Maxim gun section. Edward was reported missing in action during the third unsuccessful assault on the village of Krithia on 4th June 1915, during the Gallipoli campaign.
