A Private in the Territorial RAMC, he arrived in France on 16th January 1915. His unit was attached to 85 Brigade which was involved in the fighting at the Battle of Ypres and Hill 60 in April/May 1915. He was well regarded, being entrusted with the care of seriously ill patients.

His records show that Arthur Died on Active Service in this area of Belgium. In fact he contracted blood poisoning, became a patient and died in the hospital where he worked.
