Arthur Dainton was born on the 9th September 1899 to Charles Henry (Printers Machine Minder) and Ellen Dainton. Arthur was one of six children. In 1911, Arthur was eleven years old and living at 1 Pembroke Villas, Granville Road, South Woodford.
From being a member of the Holy Trinity Church Lads Brigade KRRC Cadets, and employed as an Errand Boy, Arthur joined the Royal Navy (most likely underage) as a Boy Seaman at Devonport. He later transferred to Portsmouth, and from 28th January 1916 served on HMS “Invincible.” He was on board the HMS Invincible on 31st May 1916 when he was killed at the battle of Jutland. His body was not recovered and his name appears on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
